CastleStorm: Definitive Edition on the PlayStation 4 was developed and published by the team at Zen Studios, and it released to favorable reviews across pretty much every platform. We desperately wanted another cheaper game to add to our library so this title fitted the bill perfectly.

What we love about video games is that they give a platform for all sorts of passions to be portrayed. For instance, we really love feudal European castles and the history of the sieges that would sometimes go down over their ownership. So imagine our joy when we found CastleStorm: Definitive Edition.

We put the game in and got to work to see if these castle walls were worth scaling, keep on reading in order to find out!

CastleStorm is a 2D title that mixes tower defense strategy with all out side scrolling action warfare. What makes this the 'Definitive Edition' is that the re-release contains HD graphics, new battles, new spells, and a pair of expansions. So there is a ton of content in here that was initially released as DLC - for no extra price for you.

You start the game as Sir Gareth, a good knight who is leading his group against an army of comically bad and over the top Vikings. During this war your faction and the Vikings are fighting to obtain an epic stolen gem and getting it back is the only way you can think to bring peace back to your realm. The story sounds pretty dark but it is lighthearted and relatively filled with fluff. The story isn’t what is on focus here. What is on focus is that you will be playing some pretty great structure creation/tower defense inspired gaming with a whole lot of wrinkles on the genre.

The main goal that you will be operating toward is the destruction of your opponents castle in each map, all while defending your own castle. There are Capture the Flag elements thrown in there but you can eschew them for straight up destruction if you want to be relatively focused. Some of the gameplay moments you run across will remind you of Angry Birds, only instead of flinging winged creatures (which would be funny) you are shooting ballista, catapult projectiles, and so much more. The longer you play the game the more unlockables you will get to add to your 2D arsenal of destruction laced aerial projectiles.

While your ballista are undoubtedly the backbone of your army, the flesh of your army comes in the form of your nameless troops. You have archers, wolves, knights, donkey riders and more that can be summed from your castle barracks in order to defend with you. They meet your opponents in the middle of the battlefield for some hack and slash brawler action. Unit summoning is very similar to the various RTS games that we grew up playing, with included cool down timers. Sometimes the key to winning a tough war will come down to your management of the cool down timers and how well you can balance summoning new fighters.

If you don’t feel like your meatbag soldiers are doing enough damage you can send sir Gareth out there to deal death out himself. Gareth has an array of special weapons and spells and he can be counted on to change the tide of battle. If you don’t want to risk Gareth you can opt for some other hero but the cool down timer is pretty heavy, so only bring these heroes out in need when you can handle it.

Getting into the game is simple and the opening tutorial tells you everything that you need to know. Much like the other simple strategy games that make it to market, and find success, the game can be as difficult or as easy as you make it. Learn the ropes in how to manage an army, and organize your troops, and you will quickly rise above your Viking foes. If you prefer just to spam soldiers and hope for the best, well, the outcome is your fault.

Fortunately there is more to the game than just this soldier summoning. The upgrade system keeps the title fresh far longer than it would have been otherwise. Pretty much everything you do in the game earns you gold and that gold can be used to unlock more heroes, add new weapons to your arsenal, and even buy spells and power ups. The game comes with a premade castle for you to defend but there is also a castle builder. You can customize your castle to make it easier to defend or optimize it to make your attacks more effective. Add rooms to allow yourself the ability to unlock new soldiers, acquire passive bonuses, increase your food supply, or even beef up your own defenses. There is something especially satisfying about watching your castle grow stronger and stronger the longer you play.

While CastleStorm: Definitive Edition has been released on just about every gaming console there is, we found that the controls were perfect for the game. You switch your units with the right and left bumper and then use the actual buttons to switch between troops, heroes, or projectile weapons.

CastleStorm offers a deep and complex single player campaign that lets you play as both the Knights and the Vikings. The game itself is deep and complex and there is a ton of replay value innate in the title. Adding in all of the DLC and you might not make it to the multiplayer mode for awhile. But multiplayer mode is equally deep and the depth of game mode options is so satisfying.

CastleStorm: Definitive Edition on the PlayStation 4 is the perfect game to dip your toes into for half an hour to a couple hours at a time. It’s a perfectly sized morsel, no matter how much you want to chew.
