'Evolve' is one of the newest games available for the Playstation 4, it was developed by Turtle Rock Studios and published by 2K Games. 'Evolve' promises players a huge world to play in that is full of interactive and deadly creatures. Mixing chaotic gameplay with high end graphics and an exhilarating array of enemies, this game may be just what you need to take your adrenaline to the next level. Many entries over promise and under deliver when it comes to starting off as a new IP. This isn't the case here.

On the prowl.

'Evolve' is set on a distant and strange planet by the name of Shear. It is handwaved away as being located in the 'Far Arm' of outer space. Human kind has established a base of living here with an array of colonies that are considered to be the most enviable, and valuable, in the known universe. Things aren't all well on Shear, as they routinely never seem to be in these games, and soon a series of monsters are knocking on the door. The monsters begin to systematically tear down what humankind worked so hard to establish and it is up to William Cabot to stop them. William Cabot is a former 'planet tamer' that has been brought out of retirement in order to stop the invasion and destruction. Cabot puts together a team of 'hunters' to help him on his mission to eliminate the monsters and save humanity. These hunters consist of a variety of different dangerous, and crazy, professions. From war vets to clinical psychopaths, it is up to this motley crew to sway everything back in humanities favor.

A feast for the eyes on the Playstation 4.

If there is one thing that we have been conditioned to expect with next generation gaming, it is this: we need to have a game that looks gorgeous. 'Evolve' succeeds on that front in a way that makes many other PS4 games look simply lacking. The game mixes the gritty textures of any 'Gears of War' title and it has the cartoonish energy of some less mature titles. The game feels like the best of both worlds mixed together and it gives gamers a real treat. The human models are deliciously rendered and each little movement is a demonstration of the art form. But what takes the cake here, as it should, is how the monsters play out. From the hulking behemoths that tower over our characters all the way to the smaller, and equally deadly creatures, there is something to enjoy. Their red eyes, gaping maws, and penchant for bloody violence steal the show whenever they are on screen.

Play with friends, grow together.

'Evolve' is following a growing line of successful titles that aim their content toward a completely online multiplayer world. 'Titanfall' worked similarly as it pushed gamers to work together, or push away, one another in a raging online battle mode. 'Evolve' doesn't do it any differently but they perhaps do it better.

Like the 'Left 4 Dead' series by Valve, 'Evolve' forces the characters to grow via in game banter. There are no rendered cutscenes or heart stopping cinematic interruptions. The game is played by you. You direct the story. You go with the characters as they grow. The game never interrupts your action in order to force some flimsy building. That isn't to say that there is a lack of character in the game. Maggie quickly becomes a fan favorite thanks to her fiery attitude. With all of that said, you will be spending the majority of your time in one of a variety of different modes. If you have any concerns over a lack of gameplay partners, don't worry. Though 'Evolve' is best enjoyed alongside a group of friends you can still play the game alone. The game offers a 'bot' option in order to add more players to your match. You can use these bots to train and prepare yourself for online mode against other players.

On the Hunt.

The game offers four different modes to choose from when booting up the title. You have 'Hunt', 'Nest', 'Rescue', and 'Defend'. These different gameplay variations are all pretty self explanatory but they provide a deep and complex system to play in. Let's take a deeper look at a pair of the most popular modes.

1. Hunt

Likely to become the most popular game mode for a variety of players, Hunt offers its gamers a complex four against one mode. In the Hunt you have a group of Hunters that are trying to find the one monster in the map, played by another player. This monster must destroy a certain power beacon in the map in order to win the game. But in order to destroy that beacon it must 'evolve' to stage 3. The other option the monster has is to kill the hunters. Every moment that the monster lives, it grows increasingly stronger. So it is up to the hunters to put it out of its difficulty early.

2. Nest

An interesting perversion of 'Capture the Flag', Nest scatters six monster eggs throughout random spots of the map. The monster characters must protect them for 18 minutes from the gang of hunters. Every so often the eggs will hatch, spawning more monsters. In order to win the match the hunter must kill all of the eggs and hatchlings.

'Evolve' have chosen to go a route that many games will soon choose to follow. The emphasis on multiplayer team work and the unique gameplay elements also make this a truly interesting title. From the scaling powers of the monsters all the way to the elaborate progression charts for the humanoid characters, players should find something to grind and reach toward as they play. The graphics are sharp on the Playstation 4, the enemies sharper, and the game rewards those who choose to put in the effort.
