In Fallout 4, it’s Boston roughly 200 years after a nuclear holocaust, with gamers assuming the role of the last survivor of a large fallout shelter known as Vault 111. Upon emerging from their shelter, players confront a devastated landscape where various factions battle for control of small settlements, and the wilderness teems with dangerous creatures, violent robots, mutated monsters, and deadly radiation. Gamers begin by creating their character, choosing from either a male or female vault survivor, and then customizing seven different S.P.E.C.I.A.L. skills.

Fallout 4 is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. The game is the fifth major installment in the Fallout series, and was released worldwide on November 10, 2015 for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Fallout 4 takes place 200 years after a war over global resources that ended in a nuclear holocaust in 2077, the story begins on the day the bombs dropped: October 23, 2077. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic Boston in which the player character emerges from an underground bunker known as a Vault. Upon leaving the Vault the player is eventually assigned his first mission by Wolf-Fang. Wolf-Fang tells the player that he sent a scouting party to the northwest and they have not been heard from since. The player's mission that follows is to find out what happened to the scouting party and try and locate them.

Character Creation.

Creating a character can be difficult for the uninitiated and your perk points will depict how the game plays out, so it is important to use your perk points with a certain degree of thought, more so on the location you are in at any given moment. There is no perfect guideline to follow. Some of the perk points include, Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and finally Luck. Personally, I would use my perk points mostly on intelligence, perception, strength, leaving the rest slightly under 5 on the scale. In addition to the perks are Bobbleheads and these grand special bonuses, this may include upgrading a skill set, or even adding points to your Special Skills. In total there are 20 Bobbleheads to find in the wastelands and they are dotted around the enormous landscapes. It is noted that 7 of these Bobbleheads are known as "Special" and these will improve your Special Skill by 1 rank. These Bobbleheads are also geared towards ranks, so in essence some of the Bobbleheads will improve charisma, or agility or any other the other mentioned above. So for example, in the Museum of Freedom there is a Bobblehead that improves Perception. So these Bobbleheads are worthy of collection as they boost your special stats.

Fallout 4 is massive and overall the gameplay will exceed 60 hours, the game also requires hard drive space that exceeds 28GB’s, with the recommended 35GB’s space to install and play. The game is set in an open world plagued by ruins from the war, the player will have to adapt to each environment and make the most of all who he/she encounters. You will meet an array of characters within the game and the dialogue used in Fallout 4 exceeds 111,000 lines of audio, so expect lots of dialogue and interactions with these characters. During the missions you will find items which can be used or combined, you can do a bit of crafting in the workshops to create items, or combine items, as long as you have the right material to hand. These components can also be broken down and can for example be used to create new weapons, armor and so forth.

The main premises of Fallout 4 is to use your wits and effectively use the characters you meet to your advantage, for example Dogmeat "the Dog" has powerful search capabilities, useful when locating lost or hidden objects, Dogmeat is also able to pin and hold enemies. The rack and ruins of the wastelands are vast and the game reminds me of a much improved Skyrim, taking all the elements that made that a success and adopting other elements which improve on that experience. Fallout 4 has a lot going for it, some of which I have barely touched upon.

In Fallout 4 they have adopted a settlement where the player is able to buy various building in different locations and modify them, every aspect of each building can be crafted, from the roof, furniture, walls, stairs, you name it, you can modify it. Within these settlements the player can even open his own shop and start trading. This aspect of the game really appeals to me, you are able to open stores and employ people to manage your settlements, in order to do this successfully you need to provide for the people who run these settlements. So to build a solid settlement that runs smooth the player will need to provide the following, employ people, provide food, water, power, beds and so on. You may also wish to improve the surrounding these people live in, by improving the furniture, keeping your little employee’s happy. This in turn increases the moral stats and improves the overall settlement growth. You also have a size meter, keep an eye on this, as eventually it will hit full capacity and it will expand, as the building gets larger it is more susceptible to attack from people, so defense needs to be put in place in order to avoid this. So you may decide to build a fence, if so make sure you include a gate, otherwise the settlers cannot get in and out of the building.

Weapons & Items.

Fallout 4 features a wide variety of weapons, and in total there is rumored to be over 52, including Baseball Bats, Pistols, Melee Weapons, Explosives, Shotguns, Pipe Rifles and various other to boot. You also have an option for Chemistry which is covered under the Crafting, being able to create and combine items to build various weapons, or perhaps for healing, all based on how the player uses or rather combines the items.

Fallout 4 overall is a much better improvement on the previous title known as Fallout 3, Bethesda Game Studios can be commended for really fine tuning an already successful franchise. The captivating environment makes for a compelling experience and you never know what odd person or settlement lies around the corner.
