Far Cry 4: Valley of the Yetis on the Xbox One is a DLC add-on which expands on the popular title known as Far Cry 4, this game was developed by Ubisoft Montreal, Ubisoft Kiev and later published online by Ubisoft.

The Far Cry series has been one of the most firmly established IPs in video games for the past couple of years. Known for optimizing action with open world exploration, the developers over at Ubisoft Montreal have been consistent in their insistence on giving us immersive and graphically impressive video games. Most recently we saw Far Cry 4 gain its release on the PS3, PS4, XB360 , XB1 and the PC. The title came out to almost immediately positive critical reviews and it wasn’t long until we found ourselves pining for the world that Ubisoft had crafted. We picked up Far Cry 4 and quickly fell in love with the fictional world of Kyrat. Once we played through the campaign, in all of its glory, we knew that we wanted more. So when Valley of the Yetis hit the market we were one of the first people to get our hands on it.

Far Cry 4 introduced us to the main character Ajay Ghale. Ghale is sent through the fictional country of Kyrat in order to mess up some people and get vengeance on a pretty flamboyant overlord. The story in Far Cry has never been the focus, as gameplay and open world exploration have always taken precedence. The violence that you encounter in Kyrat is as real and diverse as there has ever been in a Far Cry video game. You will fight giant birds, bears, and a whole host of native gangsters looking to mess you up. Kyrat itself is based on a mixture of Nepal and Thailand and the country looks gorgeously rendered. With the way that 3D graphical engines have progressed over the past decade we shouldn’t be surprised at how effective these game engines can be, but we still are.

The fundamental approach to Far Cry 4, which precedes Valley of the Yetis, is consistent with the relative tone of the series. You are placed in a tropical looking sandbox with your focus being on exploring the countryside and destroying the things that get in your way. Far Cry 4 suffered from some of the issues plaguing other entries but it definitely had some of the most colorful cast members so far and we really enjoyed getting to know them. Unfortunately the campaign itself does eventually end and when it does you’ll feel pretty bummed out. Well, have no fear because that opens the door for more Far Cry 4 with Valley of the Yetis.

DLC content has been a core part of the Far Cry experience for as long as DLC has been around. Most DLC releases consist of expanded maps and the occasional added quest, but that isn’t all you get in Valley of the Yetis. The Yetis expansion allows Kyrat to grow in a new way with a whole new land area to explore. You’ll also experience new game play mechanics and a fleshed out backstory to Ajay Ghale. DLC doesn’t have to be wasteful and it is nice to see that Ubisoft actually paid attention and gave us something worth actually downloading. Ubisoft Montreal knew that we would be downloading the game either way, so at least we know we are getting a good product.

Once you download the Valley of the Yetis DLC it will appear in your menu. Once clicking into the game you will be given a cutscene showing Ghale crashing into a wasteland of snow and trees from an airplane. The pilot that is with you is violently yanked from the wreckage and abducted. You are trapped here and the Golden Path will not be sending any help. Abruptly Valley of the Yetis has turned into a true survival game. You are in a dangerous land and it wants you dead. Now you need to survive.

So the first thing that you will be tasked with doing is getting the attention of your allies. You have to save the pilot that was abducted, arm yourself up for impending attack, and fortify a place of safety from these terrible things that want to kill you as you wait for your buddies to come rescue you. When you start out this campaign you will have no experience points. Ajay Ghale is starting from zero. You have no perks, no benefits, nothing. This is a great little twist on the DLC because typically they will let you transfer over your levels. We like it because it feels like we are getting second chance at playing the game new.

While Kyrat is huge, this expanded Valley is only about 15% the size of the map in the core game. This is a significantly reduced number but there is still a ton to explore here. This is just a DLC add on, remember, so any size is more than you would have had otherwise. There is plenty to see as you look around but there is even more to keep you busy. During the day you will spend your time hunting, digging up treasure, and fortifying the little outpost that you end up settling at. At night you will be attacked by swarm after swarm of enemies that want you dead - even including Yeti!

So we were thrilled to see that Valley of the Yetis turned into an almost tower defense style game with most of our time being spent making sure our base was safe. Arming your fort with traps is a ton of fun as soon as you get to employ them during the combat sections at night. Explosive barrels, caged bears, and so much more will go a long way toward making sure that your

If you are a fan of the Far Cry 4 video game then you owe it to yourself to purchase this title.
