Fez (stylized as FEZ on the cover) is an indie stylized puzzle platform game developed by Polytron Corporation and published later by Trapdoor. The game was released on the PlayStation 4, PC, PS Vita, and finally the PlayStation 3. Fez received over 6 awards ranging from level design, excellence in visual arts and is known the masses as the "underdog darling of the indie games scene".

Story

The in-game character you play is known as Gomez a 2D creature living in what he believes is a 2D world. Until a strange and powerful artifact reveals to Gomez the existence of a mysterious third dimension. The world is set in one of four sides of a three-dimensional shape, if effect those of you who are familiar with a Rubik’s cube will understand the dimensional shape of this world much easier.

The player rotates these four 2D square views to realign platforms and subsequently solve the in game's puzzles that are attached to them. The main objective of the Fez is to collect all the cubes and cube fragments in order to restore the universe as a whole.

Gameplay

The game can be praised for allowance of discovery and freedom, the main area of criticism came where users had various problems with the in-game navigation, and they also disliked the fact that the game often had elements of backtracking, which on occasion can really displease the gamers.

The game contains various puzzles for the gamer to solve, and the player has to decide whether these are fake signals as no assistance is offered to solve these puzzles. The exploration features various treasure maps and chests as well as secret rooms to uncover, you will have to solve various glyphs and arcane codes. Other known puzzles include invisible platforms, QR Codes, hidden warp gates, enigmatic obelisks amongst many others which assist your quest. Fez also has no sense of death, should the character accidently fall to his death then the character is respawned once again. The games main emphasis is based on puzzle solving, this is not a speed run type of game, and often patience is the main ingredient here over the more traditional platform based game. The game contains elements of both, I suppose why I am trying to say is, the puzzle aspect of the game will require some patience, more so with the code cracks towards the latter part of the game.

Fez has a lot to offer if the gamer is willing to explore, often with platform games most will tend to race through the game as fast as humanly possible, if they do that with this game then the miss a huge amount of gameplay. Like for instance the alternative routes you can take, puzzled which may have been missed in the various maps and other goodies.

The game is supposed to be geared towards old school gamers with its pixel-painted universe, old-school-inspired music playing in the background, and ever-changing scenery to avoid the old cliche of repetition. The game also has elements of comedic value, for instance Dot your floating sidekick who is supposed to help you out on the levels doesn’t offer any assistance whatever within the game on any level. In most games the sidekick helps you out, in this title he offers nothing to assist the player, adopted no doubt for comical reasons.

Graphics

The graphics are not stunning, I don’t feel they are meant to be either, you can think of the graphics and background and compare them to the old systems such as the ZX Spectrum. They don’t scream greatness, but I feel the designers wanted to keep the setting in a more simplistic design, it does have its own sort of rugged charms about it, in its own special classic way. The game is colorful and many levels are fused with vibrant shades of blue, pink, red and so on, the game also has a very clever intelligent design. This game will hugely appeal to old school gamers, those who really appreciate the old school level designs.
