Summary:

FIFA 14 on the 3DS will feel alive with players who think, move, and behave like world-class footballers, and dynamic stadiums that come to life. Players have four times the decision-making ability and feel alive with human-like reactions, anticipation, and instincts. With 10 times more animation depth and detail than previous consoles, FIFA 14 delivers the dynamic movements and biomechanics of the world’s best footballers. Players are agile and athletic as they plant, pivot and cut, and explode out of each step. The increased fidelity has a game-changing effect on gameplay.

The common joke made by those that don't play sports games is that they're essentially the same game every year. Fortunately, this joke usually doesn't apply as new features, game modes, and even mechanics are changed on a yearly basis. This year however, EA has finally validated this joke with Fifa 14 on the 3DS; a game that is literally identical to last year's version. Everything from its feature set, to menus, to in-game control layout are exactly the same; the only changes being team rosters, affiliations and colors. It's a repulsive move from EA, and one that serves to trump any goodwill or qualities found in the product itself.

Focusing on the game itself, it is at least functional and offers a decent amount of portable football content. Controls are also tight and effective, and move sets are diverse enough to give players the feeling like they're really out there on the pitch. There's a distinct thrill in setting up a perfectly planned offensive attack and thankfully this thrill makes the transition to the small screen.

Unfortunately, the well-playing core game is set back by an inconsistent framerate that interrupts action at the worst times. Nothing is more frustrating than kicking your decisive corner kick only for the action to stutter as the ball floats towards your forwards, hindering your opportunity to score. It's defeating, and something unacceptable given that the game had the exact same issues last year. Of all the complaints one could level at EA for essentially cashing in on their franchise, the year to year consistent instability of the game is perhaps the worst. It really emphasizes just how little effort the publisher put towards the title, and it's an utter slap in the face to the fans (of which there are many).

In terms of content, everything remains the same from last year, including the best mode the series has to offer in 'Be A Pro' mode. It's an RPG-lite character creation mode that enables you to build yourself (or whatever likeness you choose) up through the ranks of the soccer world. From street ball to the Manchester United front line - you feel a strong sense of progression and there's a tangible satisfaction had when you finally 'make it'. Outside of this mode are the typical 'tournament play' option (local multiplayer only) and the more in-depth manager mode. The latter allows you to effectively run your own club and make front office decisions while enjoying the regular matches. It's a fun balance for a while but before long, the office portions become very easy and repetition sets in.

On the whole, Fifa 14 is a functional game and it's filled with a solid amount of highly playable content. However, paying full price for a palette swap and up-to-date licenses seems ridiculous and it should be condemned as a business practice. When you factor in the still prevalent technical issues, it becomes an inexcusable piece of software that's priced at a premium. The advice is easy here: do yourself a favor and don't support this EA this year.
