Summary:

Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious is designed as a 'stand alone’ expansion that seeks to emulate the core gameplay elements of Forza Horizon 2 while putting them in a smaller and more focused environment with a budgeted price tag slapped on the front cover. SO that means right off the bat that this is an abridged game with shorter content and less of a reason to invest a ton of money. That doesn’t mean it isn’t good. The AAA polish of Forza Horizon 2 shines through every frame and the Xbox One wonderfully renders this into a beautiful experience. But there are some hiccups and a few things missing that most fans will want to know about before they start playing.

Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious on the Xbox One is an extended Forza experience that seeks to combine the famous car video game franchise with the famous film franchise. Released in March of 2015 by Microsoft and developed by Playground Games, Fast & Furious landed on both the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One. We found Forza Horizon 2 to be one of the most complete and riveting racing sims to ever be released. The follow up DLC expanded on the already quality content and when we heard about Fast & Furious, we had to dig in. So we got our hands on a copy for the Xbox One and got right to work, putting the rubber to the road so to speak.

Licensed games typically don’t work well when they are based off of films. We can’t really think of too many popular and capable games that were derived from a Hollywood venture. SO right off of the bat we had reason to believe that Fast & Furious was going to be a rough ride for us. On top of this fact, the last Fast & Furious game ('Showdown') was so bad that Activision refused to allow critics a chance to review the game. They knew the title was awful and it ended up being just as bad as we feared. Which is a shame, too, because the Fast & Furious film franchise is some of the most fun shlock in all of Hollywood. The films deserve a great racing experience, and we think we got it in Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious.

In Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious there is no economy or player progression chart to pay attention to. You don’t unlock the traditional perks from the other games and your focus is entirely on racing. This thin mechanic may push other gamers away but we found that it allowed us to focus on what was important: racing. In Fast & Furious you are hired by Tej Parker (Ludacris, from the films) to start racing for pink slips in order to win cars for a job that Brian (Paul Walker, from the films) needs to get done. You never see either character and they are the only franchise members that are mentioned in the game - just voice overs.

If you have already spent time watching Furious 7 then you should be well aware of the different cars that the game has on offer. Pretty much all of the notable vehicles from the film make their appearance, ranging from the ’70 Dodge Charger RT all the way to the 2015 Dodge Challenger and everything in between. You can even unlock a Lamborghini Huracan by visiting the Forza Hub at some point in your playing. On top of the 12 car roster there are also an additional four cars that you can play with by completing the various bucket list challenges that are littered around the game. These other cars can only be used within their specific game modes and are not available to take into the main game. You’ll also see a whole library of AI cars that you should recognize.

For the most part there is no crossover between Fast & Furious and the vanilla Forza Horizon 2 experience. You can’t import cars from Forza Horizon 2 and you can’t send over cars from Fast & Furious. The only time that this rule is broken occurs after you find the 20 different bonus boards available in Fast & Furious. After that happens you can collect a Toyota Supra RZ from the hub in Forza Horizon 2. A nice little feature but ultimately not as much fun as we had hoped it would be.

The experience is definitely stripped down, you lose a lot of features when leaving FH2 for Fast & Furious including usage of the Kinect, road trips, tuning, customizing your designs, and various car upgrades. That seems like a lengthy list of deleted content but there still is more than enough to keep most racing fanatics busy. You still have access to the bucket list, bonus boards, and barn finds. On the racing end you can freeroam online, do showcase events, and take part in as many regular races as you want. Fully realized stat tracking even makes its return in the title.

In terms of sheer game size Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious loses about 2/3rds of its size in comparison to Forza Horizon 2. The map is tighter and more focused but there is still plenty to do. With that being said you aren’t going to see any moments or cities from the film which is another oversight that could have really bumped up the value of the game.

One of our favorite features came in the form of the AI drivers on the road. If you have a heady friends list that has played Forza Horizon 2 then you will start to see AI based on your buddies driving abilities in the game. If you don’t have a ton of friends on your list then random Drivatars will appear to populate the world.

Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious is a fun and capable diversion at an appropriate price. A must buy for racing sim fans on a budget.
