Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures 2' was developed by Vicious Cycle and published by Bandai Namco Games for the Nintendo 3DS. The game was released last October and it served as a follow up to the surprisingly solid 'Pac-Man' spin off video game. We couldn't wait to sink our teeth into the title to see if the colorful adventures were still up to par. While admittedly not what many would consider first when looking for a solid long-term gaming experience, we still had hope for 'Ghostly Adventures 2'. Keep on reading to see if that hope turned to disappointment!

'Pac-Man and The Ghostly Adventures 2' is based on the animated television series primarily geared toward children. The animated series of Pac-Man has been surprisingly popular and it only made sense that we would get some video game spin offs, considering the source and all. Being one of the most iconic video game characters of all time really gives you clout when you are hankering for a sequel.

'Ghostly Adventures 2' is a follow up of the surprise hit, 'Ghostly Adventures' which premiered on the Wii U and the 3DS. Despite being essentially the same game, those two ports each had a different experience. The 3DS opted for 2D side scrolling platform action while the console version chose to go the full 3D route, sort of like 'Mario 64'. While both games had their ups and downs the 3DS version lagged behind in terms of enjoyment due to its simplified nature. So we were happy to see that this game leaned more on the 3D open adventure side of things and that is exactly what we got. 'Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures 2' is a fully 3D action platform game that manages to emulate while scaling down the home console version of the game.

The plot of 'Ghostly Adventures 2' is pretty simple, as far as storylines are concerned. Lord Betrayus (great name, right?) is fed up with being served defeat by Pac-Man and the rest of the gang. So the villain turns his mind to finding another way to win. In order for Betrayus to come back and take over the world, he needs a body. So he uses his vast intellect to trick Pac into stealing his body for him. The plot is nonsensical, as games about white ball eating characters tend to be, but it still sets the stage for an immature but no less entertaining experience.

Knowing that the game is derived off of the television show should make it abundantly clear that references will go over your head. If you are familiar with the show then you should be pleased as a peach to see many familiar names, places, and items popping up. The source material is appropriately acknowledged but it is not completely emulated. What we loved about the Pac-Man tv show was its wittiness and appeal to both younger and older audiences. That same engaging humor is not here. Jokes are few and far between and the ones that we do hear are woefully lacking in the punchline department.

Gamers will be stuck using a fixed camera angle while in the game. The title itself is fully 3D and what we see on screen is vibrant and fully realized. Textures pop off the screen, colors keep us engaged, and the world seems to actually exist around Pac and his gluttonous tendencies. Speaking of gluttonous tendencies...

Pac's primary job is once more to leap, walk, and eat everything in his path. He'll be devouring fruit, pellets, and ghosts with equal veracity. Ghosts have their own special ways to be dealt with and special pellets once again exist in the game. These special pellets, such as the fire pellet, can give you special abilities. You'll find yourself shooting fireballs, turning into metal, and even walking upside down on walls. The incorporation of these special pellets makes the game feel similar to 'Mario'. These special pellets aren't just for fun and destruction, though. 'Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures 2' makes sure to emphasize strategy as you play through the game and getting the right pellets at the right time will allow you to push the world further and further open.

Pac doesn't do it all on his own two feet, though. Eventually you will find your way to special highway tubes that offer you the ability to ride vehicles. You'll shoot down vehicles at breakneck speed while platforming in a whole new way. You will also be able to jump into control of Spiral and Cylindria during some of these special sequences.

Controls are tighter than ever and Pac-Man reacts lighting fast. This is doubly important due to the fact that the camera can be cumbersome and some of the puzzle/platforming sections demand perfection. The levels are appropriately laid out and they give you room to roam all over the place. We found the thumb stick controls of the Nintendo 3DS to be more than satisfactory for these levels.

Graphically speaking the game is nothing to write home about, but it does the job. Backgrounds tend to fuzz out the farther away from the screen they get and the textures themselves seem merely adequate. The frame rate isn't as good as it can be and it straggles a bit when you kick on the full 3D setting. Still the game is playable and the 3D mode adds some much needed depth to the game. We really enjoyed the character models despite the fact that they seemed lower in polygon count than perhaps they should have. Still, they looked good and that is all we hoped for from some of these iconic characters.

The Nintendo 3DS surprisingly lacks a number of good 3D platformers so we can see where 'Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures 2' is trying to go in order to establish its niche. With that frame of mind in hand you can definitely see what 'Ghostly Adventures 2' would be an enjoyable experience. We didn't hate the game and found it to be an adequate distraction from heavier titles.
