LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 (Wii) Review – If You Can’t Find Grass on the Field; Go Play Quidditch. With six game editions already made, there were fewer and lower expectations for Lego; but you’re in for a surprise. They just brought another franchise to make it the fourth franchise and a total of seven Lego games so far. This new edition is called LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1- 4. Despite being an avid fan of Lego edition games, even I did not expect that this can still be exciting. The game features a quest where you need to blast everything you see; that somehow managed rev up the feeling that this is going to be awesome. This new Lego game makes use of magnificent surrounding, spells and the wonderful aspects of the game presented by Traveller’s Tales. After some mistakes in the past, this could be Lego’s salvation and may provide the renewal of interest for gamers out there.

Veterans who have already played several other Lego games, such as Star Wars, Batman and Indiana Jones may find playing LEGO: Harry Potter game quite easy. The gameplay revolves around the first four parts/movies/books of the Harry Potter franchise with the use of Lego material in a plastic Lego world. It is a kid-friendly game - from blasting blocks and casting spells to collecting studs in the game. Dying is part of this game but you only lose some studs and you can just respawn.

Having the same aspects as those of other LEGO games, you would probably expect it to be on the boring side. But the creators have done a wonderful on this edition and the kids a new exciting experience. In this new installment, Harry Potter is equipped with a number of magical spells that are used for a particular purpose. This gives the kids a different perspective of what adventures will to anticipate in the game.

I had a great time with this game. It was quite an experience being a wizard and flying books back into the shelves or rearranging stuff with the use of the wand. There’s also nervous excitement at the anticipation of an encounter with Hagrid in the story. The thrill of not quite knowing when it’s going to happen makes the game live up to expectations in a sense.

The hub world is back in this game, making LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1- 4 more delightful. The game provides for a great tracking of levels and places with the full freedom to explore. You start off in Leaky Cauldron with your unlocked characters to Diagon alley where you can enter cheats and use your studs for your characters. Then you jump back to the story and return to Hogwarts and on to the next mission.
The game’s creators, Traveller’s Tales, did a good job of creating this new LEGO edition. They made a great depiction of Hogwarts with almost 160 characters to unlock starting with Ron and on to a less likely character like Krum.

They have put some wonderful humor and fun in the game, too. Kids can get more fun when blasting something and letting loose some skeletons in the process; or when simply watching a swimming routine of Myrtle.

There are also some noticeable improvements in this game. For one, LEGO games have been known to suffer from poor platforms, dull segments and stupid AI partners. These seem to have changed. The AI are relatively smarter, the dull segments are perhaps lesser - maybe just one or two; and the errors in the plat forms are remarkably a lot less than in the past.

The split screen co-op mode has also returned in the new installment. Together with a second player you can explore the sides by having a split screen. Unfortunately, there is no co-op for Lego Harry Potter online. Sadly, the creators never really intended to create one because they thought it was not appealing enough and rarely used; could have been a lot of fun to many gamers, though. The level creator is likewise back; but the sad thing is, you cannot upload your created level. You just have to invite your friends to come over your house to view it.

Despite the game’s downside, it has shown some significant improvements that make players still ask for more LEGO games such as this new installment.
