In this seemingly utopian paradise, a crime has been committed and now you are being hunted. You are a Runner called Faith - and this innovative first-person action-adventure is your story. Mirror’s Edge delivers you straight into the shoes of this unique heroine as she traverses the vertigo-inducing cityscape, engaging in intense combat and fast paced chases. With a never before seen sense of movement and perspective, you will be drawn into Faith’s world. A world that is visceral, immediate, and very dangerous. Live or die? Soar or plummet? One thing is certain, in this city, you will learn how to run.

Electronic Arts used to love buying out games that already had a good foundation, and it surprised us by trying to establish this fresh idea of the Mirror’s Edge. I wonder what made them do this.

Maybe a rundown of the story can help us. So, let’s meet Faith. She’s a runner in an authoritative government in an unknown land. She serves as a messenger for a secret group, delivering confidential information around them, as she has exceptional abilities to help her escape from the cops. She becomes part of this network to clear out her sister Kate’s name who was accused of murder she did not commit. The story goes well, though the characters are quite lacking and you would not feel the emotion much through the sequences and cutscenes. Good thing that these are only short parts of the game.

What’s interesting is the game environment actually. Though some buildings would appear repetitive, there would still be some styles and colors that will do the trick to accentuate them. Faith’s character also has a well-detailed character though you won’t see it most of the time. The sounds are perfect to the setup this game, and while some of the voice acting are lacking, they are tolerable enough.

As Faith, you will slide under pipes and leap off from rooftop to rooftop as well as run on walls, do pole swings, and more. This is actually impressive if we will see how greatly these are pulled off by just three of the buttons in the controller. The game also does best on letting you feel the momentum while doing the leaping through the air. Motion blurs and movements of the camera depict it best.

I personally like the fact that I can go on the game without using a gun during the police chases. Disarming the gun of an enemy during a near combat can be difficult though, and you have to have to slow down time in order to have enough time to disarm the weapon out of his hands.

Faith also has the Runner Vision or the ability to highlight things in the environment that she will likely encounter, thus making you aware of the surroundings while you leap through the roofs. I would actually appreciate it more if it was sort of like a compass to guide, but since it does not, it sometimes can even be a distraction than a help.

Within the nine chapters of the story, you will mostly do the same thing over and over again – running, leaping, jumping, and some combat – but that’s it. There might be some unlockables but no other options to play with. No multiplayer or competition – only leaderboards which will tally your score. This gives less motivation to play again and again.

If you’d ask me, I think there’s something more with the Mirror’s Edge that could have made it a winner, it’s just that the result wasn’t great. The idea is very cool and if only they would add some major modifications with the moves and combat, as well as fix the bugs, then I would be waiting for a sequel.
