Need for Speed is the twenty-second title in the Need for Speed series, developed by Ghost Games in Gothenburg, Sweden and later published by Electronic Arts for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The game was released on 3rd November 2015 in North America and the 5th November in the United Kingdom. The game is expected to be released for the PC as downloadable content so

In previous releases of Need for Speed most gamers online was motivated by racing the top drivers who perform the best track times. Ever wanting to compete in order to claim fame on the leadership boards, this has been taken away from us. Other Need for Speed titles also showed various other statistics like longest time in the air, longest joyride, fastest lap, slowest lap, things like this where trophies were earned and recognition was sweet. The game offers no real incentive to want to play this title online.

Problem 2

The dialogue shown in this game can be annoying, the cheesy storylines offer no real realism, most of the conversations with these characters are dull and boring, these are also unskipable and in some cases appear whilst your actually driving which is off-putting to say the least. The constant worry as to whether these idiots are going to appear on screen takes the fun out of driving, not to mention concentration levels. Often they will pop up as well and offer nothing of interest, on one occasion I had to listen to a conversation between two characters that did nothing to add to the overall experience for me as the player. I was expecting them to tell me to do something, or I have received a bonus for my cool driving, nothing, just waffle between two characters in a pointless encounter.

Problem 3

The frame rate stutters on certain corners within the game, this is basis 101 of driving games, there is nothing more frustrating than being unable to see whilst flying round a corner. This is made worst by the fact they often put a car on a blind corner, most corners from what I noticed. Granted this adds to the thrill of the ride but there is no randomness to this.

Problem 4

There is traffic in this game whilst you race against other players but the online traffic is few in numbers, most of the fun from the previous Need for Speed titles came when heavy traffic was evident in the game, close calls, shaves, having to really concentrate to pass through the traffic. In a 3 minute race whilst driving a considerable distance I only passed 6 cars, most of them were towards the latter part of the race. I understand this game is set at Night and Dawn but surely you could have included some more traffic to add to the thrill of driving. Otherwise why not just put it on a race track and be done with it.

Problem 5

The scenery although very well done contains little imagination like seen in other racing titles, most of the scenery is mountains, old warehouses, industrial building offering no life, it also states you must go slow to appreciate the scenery in this game. What? You cannot have a title and call it Need for Speed and expect gamers to want to drive like old grandpa. There are little to no rewards offered to gamers, for example, in the old series if you drove through a garage the nitro was boosted, or the car was repaired or upgraded, none of this is evident. There are no shortcuts for the driver to take and so real signs of life outside of the cars.

Problem 6

You may be performing a time trial online whilst other driving are competing and if I so wanted I simply would crash into you and your trial is over, even effecting your overall stats. Or you might find someone online looking at the menu and the game continues because there is no pause button. The result for the person looking at the menu is the car veers off and can at time ram straight into you.

Problem 7

Most gamers myself include like to customize cars right from the bat, being able to race in a car we actually like to drive, Need for Speed offers none of this, you have to perform several races before you can customize the car, the color choice offered to us is borderline shocking at best. Almost in an effect to annoy the gamer.

Problem 8

The garage only allows you to own 5 cars in total, which is needlessly restrictive, but even then, the game heavily incentivizes you to use one car for your entire playthrough races. The career is so short that you earn just enough money to customize one car. To make matters worse, there are only 31 trophies, and they're pretty easily achievable. Everything about this game comes up short. There are 5 styles of racing; speed, style, outlaw, crew, and builder. There's no incentive to play a certain style because choosing one style doesn't earn anything exclusive. You just play how you would play even if the game didn't shove 5 styles.

Overall, Need for Speed has unfortunately taken a step back in achieving something that should have been worthy of Webster’s, the game is a huge letdown and let’s hope Ghost Games takes the criticism well and improve upon the overall online experience in these areas, it is sorely lacking in scope and imagination.
