The first Super Monkey Ball was a blast, everyone loved it and it gained millions of followers. But then the others came along and slowly but surely, the franchise started disintegrating finally bombing thanks to the super Monkey Ball Adventure. Thankfully, Banana Blitz came around and suddenly the franchise was invigorated and much improved. This is welcome good news to the many fans that were frustrated and disappointed at the downturn of the franchise.

The game was always simple and the controls were limited to one analog stick. This simplicity is that key that made the Wii translation successful and natural. The gamer needs to use the gyroscopic features to control the movements like tilting the controller for the forward, back and side movements which translates to the screen. This is a very simple but highly effective movement control which is just perfect for the game. But the game is also very sensitive to the controls so there is no development of the carpal tunnel to get the response on the screen. The game starts out simple enough then increasingly gets challenging. The only downside is that the remote has to be placed on the right hand and this takes some getting used to.

The gameplay is challenging with having to manage the movements of the monkey and navigating it through the wild courses. The time limit to complete the courses adds a higher level of challenge to the gameplay which is just perfect for this type of game. There are eight worlds to get through and there are several boss fights the player has to get over and win. The ‘enemy’ is frequently something that is much bigger, stronger and more cunning than the monkey, but when the weak spot is found then the monkey can just grin its way right over it. The camera does not really help during these boss fights for it cannot be controlled and it can lock onto the boss during the fights. But then again, that is just all part of the challenge.

Comparing the previous versions of Super Monkey Ball, the Banana Blitz is a welcome relief. Not only is it a better game play, but it is more challenging. The controls are easy and sensitive making maneuvering and controlling the monkey a pleasure. The added feature of the multiplayer component just adds on to the challenge and intrigue of the game. The length of the single player though is quite disappointing, it is just not long enough. But the highs are way much higher than the lows and this is one game that would have to be highly recommended.
