Summary:

Titanfall: Frontier's Edge is the second DLC map pack for Titanfall. Featuring three all new maps: Dig Site, Export and Haven on the far reaches of the Frontier.  In desperate need of raw materials to support Titan production at their newly established base of operations, IMC forces begin probing attacks at the edge of the Frontier, striking at smaller, lightly defended settlements. Isolated mining operations are targeted in particular for the resource rich substrate found within their dig sites. Battles at these sites spill over to the nearby port city of Export, where local Militia forces struggle to stave off the IMC.

'Titanfall: Frontier's Edge' on the Xbox One was developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts for almost the sole purpose of putting a smile on the faces of first person shooter fans everywhere. The game was tailor made to inspire mecha fans to pick up the Xbox One and it accomplished its job with flying colors. The game released to great reviews, winning over 60 awards at E3 including a slew of 'Best Original...' trophies. The game features hectic firefights, giant robots, and a quality campaign that is flawlessly integrated into the online multiplayer mode. When 'Expedition' released as the first of two DLC packs fans were happy. With 'Frontier's Edge' coming out, fans should be ecstatic.

The last DLC...

'Titanfall' features the best of everything we could ever hope for out of an action packed launch title. The giant robotic Titans loom tall over a battlefield that is riddled with debris, bodies, and destroyable content. Pilots run around on the ground trying to evade their humongous enemies all while trying to get back to their own robot. Being on your feet doesn't mean that you are dead, no, it just means that you need to hurry up and employ every survival trick that there is in the book.

'Titanfall' has routinely been referred to as the 'Call of Duty' of robot games. Sure, the action is frenetic and the deadly firefight elements seem to be inspired by the other acclaimed franchise, but that seems like a lazy comparison. 'Titanfall' does so much more to push the genre forward that merely calling it a rehash seems borderline offensive. The game reads like a love letter to the legendary 'Gundam' series mixed with the best of what our world of FPS shooters has perfected.

Let's not spend all of our time waxing eloquent over how well the initial game was made. Instead let us take a look at what 'Frontier's Edge' does to inspire gamers to come back for more.

At its core all the DLC released for 'Titanfall' does is give gamers a few more maps to destroy the ever loving heck out of one another. 'Expedition' featured three new maps (War Games, Runoff, Swampland) that were completely unique to one another. This was great for fans who wanted a diverse selection of maps to play on. 'Frontier's Edge' chooses to instead follow a theme. This could be seen as a negative or a positive thing. We'll merely comment on the elements of the three themed maps and let you be the judge.

Before we delve into the new maps we find that we must take a moment to acknowledge the genius that is 'The Black Market' addition to the game, via this DLC. In 'Frontier's Edge' you can collect 'Burn Cards' via the battlefield. Burn cards are essentially one use power ups that can sway the element of a battle into your direction. You can stack a deck of power ups to put on your side in battle or you can sell them off, earning enough credits to purchase your own specific packs from the Black Market. This adds an element of strategy to the game and a bit of collecting for the obsessive, achievement wrought player.

The three maps included in the new DLC are: Dig Site, Haven and Export. They are all tied thematically to the mining motif that is semi prevalent in the online campaign. The primary campaign is centered on the war between the IMC and the Militia over certain aspects of mining that keep popping up. To be honest we don't pay that much attention to the storyline. There is just too much to kill. There are no new weapons or Titans to speak of. Just more great places to lay waste to your enemies. Without further ado...

DIG SITE

The first map that we tried out was Dig Site. Despite the generic name and the initially off putting layout, the map was immensely enjoyable. You start off in a world of gang planks, machinery, and brown muddy walls. There is metal everywhere and you can instantly see how easy it will be to parkour your pilot across the map. The vertical element in Dig Site is not to be hand waved away as it gives a whole new element of strategy for the motivated pilot/Titan combo. It is a good thing that first impressions aren't everything.

Dig Site is the perfect place to play any of the different game modes available. Outside of looking ugly, there are few issues with the map itself. The biggest problem that may present itself to online gamers is the prevalence of campers in the highest reaches of the map. That's war though and it's your job to take them out.

HAVEN

Haven is as different as it gets. From the muddy walls of a dark and metal cave to the blue skies of a beach resort, it is time to get some action under the sun. The buildings are smaller in this map and there is less of an emphasis on verticality. Instead you will focus on dashing through tight alley ways and spending time pushing your parkour to the absolute limit. Capture the Flag played most enjoyably on this map due to the inability to camp out but they all felt pretty good. The big open areas gave room for the Titans to get down to some serious one on one action.

EXPORT

The final map in the selection is set in a mining town off the coast of some foreign ocean. It's a rounded map with a natural flow between the different choke points in the game. This was probably our favorite map due to the fact that it was carefully designed to pay off for the strategic parkour pilot. You can get from window to platform no matter where you are in the map with a well timed jump. We've never felt as cool running away as we do in this level.

The 'Frontier's Edge' expansion pack isn't perfect but it is a perfect cap to put on the head of the first entry into the 'Titanfall' franchise. We can't suggest it enough for fans of the core game. The maps are wonderful and pose a great counterpoint to the other DLC content.
