Worms Battlegrounds is an artillery strategy video game developed and published by Team17. It was released on 30 May 2014 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

There are two people in this world: those that understand the joy of the Worms franchise and those that don't. Okay, well that's probably a bit dramatic. There are probably a ton of people in this world that are ambivalent or even just lukewarm toward the long running franchise. This turn based strategy franchise has been going since 1995 and it has raised quite the cult following along the way. Now the lovable Worms guys have made it to the big leagues by dropping their Xbox 1 title, Worms Battlegrounds. If you've ever played a Worms game, or even have just a passing knowledge of them, you can already tell where they decided to go with the game.

In the Worms world you can either kill your enemies or be killed. Armed with an arsenal of quirky and pandemonium creating weapons means that every turn can be a game changer. The calling card of the series has always been the co-op and versus multiplayer and this hasn't changed, not completely. There is still the basic co-op which involves you and up to three friends. You can do battle with one another through local play or accessing the internet. Local play can be as simple as passing one controller around the room or having each person linked in with their own controller. The following game play will be familiar for those that have tasted the battle in Worms before. Nothing new here and while that is disappointing it is still as entertaining as ever. At times innovation can be bad, but this is not one of them.

If you are the kind of gamer that doesn't want to spend much time battling with your friends the Worms franchise DID decide to revamp their campaign mode. In the campaign you will play as a group of worms with the sole mission of finding a stone carrot before the not-so-nice Mesmer can get his hands on it. If Mesmer were to grab the carrot he would then be able to brainwash everyone in the world. In the ensuing levels you will learn different ways to compete int he Worms world all while progressing through the story. You will be tasked with going to different museums and finding map pieces as well as different map readers. It's a ridiculous story and one that is narrated by Katherine Parkinson, a star of the hit television show 'The IT Crowd'. Her deadpan humor really sells the absurdity of the story.

Levels in game are more diverse in their obstacles and design. Probably taking a cue off of the popular mobile apps of today, the Worms crowd decided to implement levels that could change when certain effects were triggered. This means that doors can move, obstacles re-arrange, and worms killed instantly if they are in the wrong area. To offset this new standard of difficulty we now have the ability to save at checkpoints throughout the game. This is often times a much needed addition due to the sheer difficulty of some of the levels. There are interesting scenarios that change up the flavor of your gameplay accordingly and they go a long way toward keeping everything feeling fresh.

One of the most important aspects of a game like Worms is the stability of the AI. Oftentimes an AI that is too strong can turn off gamers. Conversely, if the AI is incredibly stupid then it will be equally un-enjoyable. The AI in Worms seems to blend the two levels competently. The AI is capable of making crazy accurate shots but they are also equally capable of falling to 'human error'. that means that they will sometimes overshoot by a ton or even harm themselves, or teammates, on accident.

Worms is a unique experience in that it hasn't changed much but each iteration brings in a whole new slew of new die hard fans. Worms Battlegrounds is the crowning jewel of the Worms franchise despite some issues with glitches and multi player staleness. The endearing voice work, eye catching level design, and popping color all serve to remind us what we are here to do: kill our friends, designed as worms, in competitive turn based total war.
